The work, the need and the impact

01

The Challenge

Conflict affected community

In today’s world, conflict-affected populations, including victims, perpetrators, refugees, and at-risk youth are often caught in a vicious cycle of violence and conflict, fuelled by unhealed psychosocial trauma. Humanitarian aid providers typically overlook the deep emotional wounds and psychosocial trauma carried by those affected by wars, unrest and natural disasters.

02

Our Approach

Our Approach

Peacebuilding through Resilience & Leadership was launched by IAHV UK in 2013, spearheaded by Dr. Katrien Hertog, an expert in both academic peacebuilding and trauma-informed practices. With support from IAHV UK, she developed the programme from the ground up, later securing a major EU grant to scale the impact.

03

Our Impact

Peacebuilding impact
  • 300,000+ trauma relief beneficiaries (Iraq, Israel-Palestine, Kashmir, India, US, Balkans, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka, Northern Caucasus and Afghanistan).
  • 7400+ fighters laid own arms (Kashmiri militants, Naxalite terrorists, FARC rebels, Kosovo Liberation Army veterans, the LTTE in Sri Lanka, militants in Assam, Maoists in Nepal).
  • Columbia breakthrough in peace process: FARC leadership embraces Gandhian principles of non-violence and agrees to speed up the peace process after mediation by IAHV founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in June 2015.
  • Gangs: reintegration of gang members.
  • Reconciliation between tribes/villages.
  • Healing, Resilience and Prevention of Extremism for 18,000 war affected children in Lebanon and Jordan (EU project).
  • Reduced PTSD symptoms amongst the USA war veterans.
